Elon Musk makes this ‘free promise’ for Spacex’s satellite service Starlink for everyone in the world – Times of India

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has announced that the company’s Starlink satellite internet service will offer access to emergency services on mobile phones for people in distress, even in areas without traditional cellular coverage – free of charge and for everyone in the world. However, this free service is subject to approval by country governments.“After thinking it through, SpaceX Starlink will provide emergency services access for mobile phones for people in distress for free,” he said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).“This applies worldwide, subject to approval by country governments. Can’t have a situation where someone dies because they forgot or were unable to pay for it,” he added.

SpaceX seeks FCC to commercially operate direct-to-cellular Starlink technology

This announcement comes as SpaceX, in partnership with T-Mobile, is seeking approval from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to commercially operate its direct-to-cellular Starlink technology. The direct-to-cellular technology will supplement existing cellular coverage by providing connectivity to users from space, particularly in “dead zones” where terrestrial networks are unavailable. Last week, SpaceX wrote a letter to the FCC, seeking an approval to expand the satellite-based service to all users.“This could help a lot of people if they are stranded in the wilderness,” Musk said.In the letter, SpaceX also said that it has already launched over 100 such satellites that have demonstrated robust capabilities. “SpaceX has already launched nearly 130 direct-to-cellular satellites into space over the last eight months, with more launches on the way. T-Mobile and SpaceX have also made significant progress testing the early network, demonstrating the robust capabilities of the system to connect consumers and First Responders in a wide diversity of conditions from rural fields and oak-filled valleys to dense urban environments, including while on the move,” the letter said.It is to be noted that Apple already has an Emergency SOS feature on newer iPhones, and recently Google also introduced the feature into the Pixel 9 series of smartphones.
